Calcium – A study involving a multivariate model concluded that higher intakes of calcium increased odds of Tinnitus, at 95% confidence levels1.

Copper – Low levels of serum level copper were significantly prevalent in patients with Tinnitus, when compared to a control group without Tinnitus2.

Magnesium – A study sponsored by Mayo clinic found a significant relation between Magnesium deficiency and Tinnitus3. Manganese – Both Manganese deficiency and toxicity can cause Tinnitus4.  Deficiency is caused by lack of consumption of whole grains, fruits and vegetables while toxicity is often caused by hazardous workplace inhalation of certain fumes.

Zinc – A study concluded that 82% of Zinc-deficient patients who received zinc supplementation experienced a decrease in Tinnitus severity, with decibel levels dropping 10 dB in 46.4% of the patients given zinc supplementation 5.

Vitamin Deficiencies and Toxicity that Cause Tinnitus

Vitamin A – A study with over 65,000 women concluded that Vitamin A deficiency increased chances of hearing loss 6, which can then sometimes present Tinnitus as a co-symptom.

Vitamin B1 – A study concluded that there may be some correlation between Vitamin B1 (Thiamine) deficiency and Tinnitus, especially if the patient is elderly 7.

Vitamin B2 & B3 – A Korean study involving more than 7,500 individuals concluded that a reduced intake of Vitamins B2 and B3 may be associated with Tinnitus and Tinnitus related annoyance 8.

Vitamin B5 – There have been no studies that have significantly linked Tinnitus to Vitamin B5 deficiency or toxicity

Vitamin B6 – There have been no studies that have significantly linked Tinnitus to Vitamin B6 deficiency or toxicity

Vitamin C – A Tinnitus study involving 139 elderly patients concluded that Vitamin C deficiency did not affect Tinnitus in a significant manner 10.

Vitamin D – A study compared 201 Tinnitus patients against a control group without Tinnitus. It concluded that 51% of Tinnitus patients were Vitamin D deficient while only 22.2% of the control group was Vitamin D deficient, thereby suggesting a strong correlation between Vitamin D deficiency and Tinnitus prevalence 11. Vitamin E – The Journal of the Acoustical Society of America found that Vitamin E deficiency was particularly prevalent in patients suffering from Tinnitus characterized by a roaring noise in the ear. They also concluded that this usually led to progressive deafness, if not treated 12.

Vitamin K – There were no significant studies relating Vitamin K deficiency or toxicity to Tinnitus.

Folic Acid (Folates) – Folic acid is considered an essential vitamin and it plays a crucial part in regulating ear health. Folic acid deficiency leads to poor absorption of a compound called homocysteine which then is linked to prevalence of Tinnitus and age-related hearing loss. A study of over 700 elderly men and women showed that Folic Acid supplementation slowed the decline of hearing 13.
